Like something out of Q’s lab in a James Bond movie, Jeep’s new Night Vision Camera allows you to see even further down the road at night regardless of how dark it is. What is Jeep’s Night Vision Camera technology, and how does it work?

Jeep’s Night Vision Camera is basically exactly what it sounds like: it’s a camera that provides you with the ability to see further down the road at night. Infrared sensors and thermographic technology combine to highlight anything with a heat signature on the path ahead, directly onto the screen of the digital instrument cluster right above your wheel. This means whether an animal or a person is crossing the road, they will appear on the display cluster well before they’re visible to the naked eye!

How far ahead does the Night Vision Camera see?

The current iteration of Jeep’s Night Vision Camera technology can scan the road up to 200 meters ahead, providing a serious heads-up when you’re out driving at night. To put it into perspective, the speed limit on Ontario streets is 50 km/h unless otherwise posted. That means you could know about a potential pedestrian or animal crossing the road up to four seconds earlier than by sight alone. And that four seconds of extra reaction time can easily be the difference between a collision, or successfully slowing down and stopping before impact. This is especially true in winter, when road conditions mean even the sharpest reflexes might not be enough. If you spend a lot of time driving at night on the highway, this could also mean the difference between getting home safely at night, or visiting the auto body repair shop for a deer-related mishap.
