Comparing the 2022 Ram 1500 & the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic | Oxford Dodge

The iconic Ram 1500 pickup truck is back for the 2022 lineup along with the essential 1500 Classic model. If you’re interested in getting to know the 2022 Ram 1500 or the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic you should be aware of the differences between the two models. Oxford Dodge has the rundown for shoppers who may not be aware of the full history behind this “classic” pickup truck.

What Are the Differences Between the 1500 and the 1500 Classic?

The idea behind having both a “1500 model” and a “1500 Classic model” is actually highly customer-driven. All pickup trucks must evolve to suit the growing needs of new drivers, but Ram recognized early on that there would be an equally logical demand for a simplified version of their iconic pickup. This is the overarching distinction between the 2022 Ram 1500 and the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic. Ram’s answer to “if it ain’t broke” seems to be rooted in providing additional choice starting from that oh, so popular foundation. Let’s break down exactly what you can expect to see from each model.

Design & Key Features

While both of these pickup trucks come with various 2022 appearance packages for personalizing your ride, they also both have plenty of unique design features at the base level.

At first glance, the 2022 Ram 1500 is instantly characterized by a sleeker, more streamlined shape. Its Active Air® grille shutters and class-exclusive Active-Level™ Four-Corner Air Suspension system are what give the 1500 its best-in-class aerodynamics. A lighter frame and new, cutting-edge high-strength steel make the 1500 stronger and faster than ever before without being weighed down. Inside, the 1500 is all about luxury. Dozens of heated, ventilated, and genuine leather seating/surface options are available along with real wood accents, reclining rear seats, power side steps, and more.

The 1500 Classic is just that; Classic. Fans of the original 1500 generations will instantly recognize the fenders, badging, and large crosshair grille before taking note of some stylish new details and wheels. What the Classic lacks in luxury amenities it makes up for in practical utility. The 1500 Classic comes with oodles of smart storage including a fold-down centre console (also a seat), rear in-floor compartments, fold-flat load floor system, and a class-exclusive RamBox® Cargo Management System.

Both models also offer available sunroof options on higher trims.

Performance

The 2022 Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic both come standard with a 3.6L V6 with 8-speed automatic transmission and multi-link coil spring rear suspension. The Classic offers the option to upgrade to a 5.7L V8 engine (with FuelSaver MDS), but the 1500 offers up a choice of 4 more powerful engines from the 5.7L V8 all the way up to a 6.2L Supercharged HEMI® V8 to deliver up to 702 horsepower. The 2022 Ram 1500 definitely packs more muscle but the 2022 Classic comes with better overall fuel economy despite the 1500’s commitment to the eTorque system. Consider also that the Classic now offers a part-time 4WD system for those who don’t necessarily need the full-time function found on most 1500 models. This is just another example of how each of these capable trucks will likely appeal to different driving styles.

Safety & Technology

Carrying over its theme of heightened luxury, the 2022 Ram 1500 is also packed with a suite of infotainment and connectivity features such as the available Uconnect 5 multimedia system, a massive 8.4- to 12-inch touchscreen, and the 900-watt Harman Kardon® Surround Sound system.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic on the other hand comes with far fewer infotainment options (Uconnect 3 and a 5-inch touchscreen), but still sports a highly convenient multipurpose media hub in the centre fold-down bin. This hub includes a 12-volt charging point, a remote USB port, and an auxiliary audio input for all your basic connectivity needs. The Classic also comes standard with a ParkView® Rear Back-Up Camera and an available Trailer Brake Control system.

When it comes to standard safety features, the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic comes out on top with the entire Electronic Stability Control system:

  • Hill Start Assist
  • Trailer Sway Control
  • Electronic Roll Mitigation
  • Rain Brake Support
  • Ready Alert Braking
  • Traction Control

The 2022 Ram 1500 however, only offers Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking
Park-Sense® and Front and Rear Park Assist on higher trims. The 1500 doesn’t come with any sort of Electronic Stability Control system or additional driver assist features.
